A Behind-The-Scenes Look At VetCare’s Recruitment Strategy

If you’re in the veterinary field, you already know that it’s not just a job— it’s a passion for healing, medicine and science. It’s about the thrill of diagnosing complex cases, the satisfaction of solving a problem, and the dedication to advocating for those who can’t advocate for themselves. But let’s face it, the last few years have been tough. We’ve seen burnout, a shortage of resources, and a lot of stress.

That’s why VetCare wants to help. This job can be incredibly demanding, and it’s easy to feel like you’re not getting enough support or recognition despite playing such a valuable role in animal welfare. We want you to find a place where your efforts are valued; a platform where you can build your practice with the help of a country-wide collective of veterinary professionals.

That said, let me introduce myself. I’m Brian Dawson, and I head up our recruitment team. My goal? To connect amazing veterinarians and vet techs with practices across Canada where you can truly thrive. How do I do it? Keep reading to find out!

At VetCare, we don’t put profits at the expense of our people. As part of our close-knit community of practices, you’ll enjoy the perks of a corporate vet clinic without the usual headaches. It’s like working for a privately-owned clinic, but with the added support of a collective backing you up.

My Secret Recipe: The “Fit Principle”

You could say I’ve been recruiting since I was born – I’ve been doing it for over 30 years. I’ve always been a planner and an organizer and have been assigning roles to people since I could talk… and over the years, I’ve developed a strategy for matching candidates with positions they’ll love.

What I call the “fit principle” has been central to my approach. People often know what they don’t want, but figuring out what they do want can be tricky. My role is to help them discover that. It’s not just about matching skills to job requirements; it’s about understanding personal values, career goals, and how someone’s unique personality and work style align with a specific team’s culture and needs.

Each practice within VetCare has its own unique vibe, and we don’t interfere with that. We appreciate that each piece of our community offers a different atmosphere, which is why we focus on fitting people in like puzzle pieces. By applying the “fit principle,” I work to match the right person with the right environment, ensuring that they complement each other.

Ultimately, it’s about finding that comfortable alignment where both the individual and the practice can grow and succeed together – and have fun doing it.
